چکیده
Formocresol applied to vital pulp tissue may be absorbed systemically. The possible effect of the systemic absorption of formocresol is unknown. The purpose of this project was to determine the acute toxic effect of systemically administered formocresol. Two dogs were anesthetized and Buckley’s formocresol was administered i.v. a t doses of 0.05 and 0.1 5 ml/kg respectively. Blood pressure and heart rate were continuously recorded. Blood samples and timed urine collections were made for chemical analyses and tissue samples were collected for histological evaluation. Transient cardiac arrhythmias occurred in both dogs. A decrease in blood pressure and heart rate occurred in the dog receiving the higher dose. Following formocresol administration, the plasma enzyme profiles demonstrated an elevation in LDH, SGOT and alkaline phosphatase. The urinary SGOT levels were below plasma levels while urinary LDH and alkaline phosphatase paralleled plasma levels. Blood was detected in the urine of each animal. Histologically the kidneys revealed glomerular edema, cloudy swelling and hydropic change of the tubular epithelium. The lungs exhibited an atypical pneumonitis with septal fibrin deposition.

Evaluation of acute and sub-acute toxicity of Pinus eldarica bark extract in Wistar rats
Objective: Pinus eldarica (P. eldarica) is one of the most common pines in Iran which has various bioactive constituents and different uses in traditional medicine. Since there is no documented evidence for P. eldarica safety, the acute and sub-acute oral toxicities of hydroalcoholic extract of P. eldarica bark were investigated in male and female Wistar rats in this study. Materials and Method...
متن کاملTissue changes induced by the absorption of formocresol from pulpotomy sites in dogs.
Formocresol applied to vital pulp tissue is absorbed systemically and distributed throughout the body. The sites of injury and the systemic effects of the intravenous administration of high doses of formocresol have been determined. The purpose of this project was to determine whether cellular injury could be detected following formocresol application to vital pulp tissue. Five dogs were anesth...
متن کاملDo we still need formocresol in pediatric dentistry?
Most pediatric dentists in the United Kingdom and North America1,2 use formocresol pulpotomy for vital primary pulp therapy. In the United Kingdom, 54% of pediatric dentists reported concerns about possible sensitization, toxic, mutagenic or carcinogenic effects of formocresol; 42% of specialists surveyed in 2002 were considering changing their pulp technique to avoid formocresol.1 We performed...

Background and aim: Pentavalent antimony compounds are the first line treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis. Clinical resistance to pentavalent antimony in the form of meglumine antimoniate (Glucantime) has been recognized as a problem in leishmaniasis. Herein, clinical response to Glucantime were studied in patients suffered from cutaneous leishmaniasis.Materials and Methods: In a cross-sectio...
